Reimagining Found Objects: The Signal Box

In 2013 Spacehub + friends (Studio Weave, Chris Dyson Architects and Kinnear Landscape Architecture) were commissioned to design the landscape and public realm for The Goodsyard. As part of the commission we were looking at the interface of the high park with Brick Lane. That’s when our friends at Chris Dyson Architects brought the old Signal Box to our attention. A famous local landmark that had been demolished to make way for the construction of the London Overground railway. The team soon realised the potential of re-installing a similar structure in the scheme.

The new signal box, clad in weathered steel, will be located at the east end of the new Goodsyard high park and stands over a new portal cut into a surviving brick arch, creating a strong visual marker on Brick Lane. Conspicuous and iconic, it is designed to accommodate small gatherings organised by local residents and to encourage them to connect with, and take emotional ownership of, the new park.
