For this residential scheme on the site of an old iron foundry we developed a unifying concept which references the site’s history. At the entrance there is a sign in corten steel and this material then winds through the development as a ribbon forming elements such as planters, paving, walls and seating. In addition, we designed a wildlife garden that includes nesting areas and an insect hotel, plus a children’s playground and an outdoor gym. We achieved all this within space that was restricted by the need to accommodate vehicular movements and client’s need to optimise the amount of built space. Our inventive approach to design allowed us to make the most of the relatively restricted area and introduce both biodiversity and generous amenity and recreation provision.
