Spacehub are delighted to have played a significant role in this major regeneration project for Slough. Working in close collaboration with Bblur Architecture we helped knit back together the heart of Slough with a public realm scheme which has transformed people’s experience of the town centre and the route from the railway station. We used high-quality materials in a restrained palette and made much more space for pedestrians. The main road through the town has been transformed into a tree-lined boulevard with increased pavement widths. Innovations include the creation of mini ‘parklets’ around the bus stops. We have angled the shelters so that waiting passengers can see when their buses are coming. A pedestrian crossing replaces a 110m diameter roundabout and we have removed all guardrails to the roads. A new public square in front of the station completes the change which means that residents and visitors now see the centre of Slough as a place for the pedestrian rather than being squeezed by the demands of motor vehicles.
