Spacehub have worked in close collaboration with Fletcher Priest architects to focus on creating a new mixed-use scheme situated in Romford, where people want to live, work and dwell. Located in what is known as the Land of the Fanns, derived from the Saxon word for fen meaning ‘low marshy land or low-lying district’ which describes much of the surrounding landscape. The soft landscape aimed to transition between a distinctive riparian planting palettes along the river, to a linear woodland adjacent to Rom Valley Way. A network of spaces joined by a series of pathways connects pedestrians and cyclists to the river and other spaces such as the Local Park, Forest park, Ecology Park, and a school.
The partial naturalisation of the River Rom at Rom Valley represented a significant opportunity to begin the process of re-connecting the River Rom with the Chase Nature Reserve and the wider landscape network. A rich bank of riparian shrub and tree planting enhances the riverside character and creates an important habitat for wildlife.
The Maker’s yard provides a space for the Seedbank Centre’s industrial units and related activities. The wide, largely hard landscaped street allows for both pedestrian and vehicular movement, whilst retaining pockets of social spill-out space and is seen as a future activity hub for businesses’ daily activities.
Located on a meander of the River Rom the design intended encourage people to get closer to the water and included a timber boardwalk leading through small groves of riparian tree planting and swathes of grasses and wild flowers. Stepped seats within the landscape provide space to take the time to sit, relax and socialise.
