Spacehub worked in close collaboration with JTP and Regal London to deliver the planning application for Orchard Wharf on the Leamouth South Peninsula.
Situated on the north bank of the River Thames, directly opposite the O2 Arena, Orchard Wharf has been vacant for nearly 30 years. Orchard Wharf is the first of its kind to propose a mix of maritime industrial use and waterfront living, while honoring the history and heritage of the wharf. Five residential blocks sit above a safeguarded wharf, removing haulage vehicles from London’s busy roads through waterborne freight.
The landscape strategy is inspired by the surrounding natural landscapes. Orchard Wharf sits between the Lea and Thames river valley and the Bow Creek Ecology Park and East India Dock Basin. The creation of a dynamic, ephemeral plant palette using drought tolerant, self-seeding pioneer species seeks to invite the surrounding habitats into Orchard Wharf.
A new public green space at ground level allows the natural setting of East India Basin to bleed into Orchard Wharf and completes the aspirational green corridor linking Limmo Park and the historic Basin.
The podium garden includes vast areas of Open Mosaic Habitat to replace and enhance the existing brownfield habitat. This detail has been closely developed with The London Wildlife Trust to provide a rich habitat upon what is a functioning working wharf. It is the interplay of nature and industry that the landscape seeks to celebrate while responding and connecting into Orchard Wharf’s unique setting.
