The Folkestone Harbour Plan is the final piece of the Folkestone Seafront Masterplan, which Spacehub have been working on since 2017. Working closely with architects A is For, and on behalf of Folkestone Harbour and Seafront Development Corporation, Spacehub have developed the landscape and public realm surrounding the 3 harbour plots.
Folkestone’s harbour has a unique context and varied edges, with Folkestone town to the north, the open sea to the east, the beach to the south, and the crescent plots to the west. Further afield, the Lower Leas Coastal Park and the Warren Country Park provide further inspiration. The landscape and public realm draws on this rich context to form a variety of spaces and connections around the harbour.
The northern harbour edge will feature a seated amphitheatre to host events, and will reveal the historic stone wall and provide access to the water’s edge. The sea defences to the east of the site will be rebuilt and feature a new publicly accessible seafront park. To the southern edge, the final shingle garden in the masterplan will include ‘dunescape’ planting and natural play. Within the interior of the harbour plan, the proposals also feature a garden square which frames the retained Harbour Masters House, a series of streets and lanes, and a private residents garden.
