The playfulness of the design of this new public square is a response to its special circumstances. In addition to serving a residential scheme it abuts the site of the House of Reeves furniture shop, a local landmark that was burnt down in the London riots in 2011. It also faces the gable end of a locally listed former Mission Hall. The square uses the concept of ‘refurnishing’, with an over-scaled sofa and lamp placed on a paved ‘rug’ and a series of brightly coloured packing cases to signal a new beginning for this locally well-known area. There is a podium garden for use by residents, offering play for young children and a high-quality biodiverse planting scheme.
