Working on behalf of Hertshten properties Spacehub have produced landscape and public realm proposals alongside architects Woods Bagot, continuing our work in the City of London. The proposals for the new office tower include significant urban greening throughout the building on the east, west and upper south elevations. The site is located next to the historic Leadenhall Market and will provide a new public hall at ground level which joins onto the existing market as well as a new public cultural viewing gallery on level 05.
The new Public Hall at ground level provides a significant public space which compliments the existing Leadenhall Market. The central area of the hall is envisaged to be used by pop ups or small vendors and will provide a complementary event space to Leadenhall Market. A historic East-West route will contribute to increased pedestrian permeability in the area, supported by footway widening on Gracechurch Street to increase pedestrian comfort.
The level 05 heritage garden and cultural space will provide a new public cultural asset that highlights the significance of the roman history of the site and celebrates the listed architecture of the neighbouring buildings. The gallery features woodland inspired planting which can be viewed from street level and offers a vegetated view when standing within the gallery. The gallery will be delivered in partnership with Museum of London with exhibition spaces and potential activities such as an immersive virtual reality experience and a cafe.
The Heritage walkway will provide a route around the outer edge of the building overlooking the historic roof of Leadenhall market, offering a new vantage point to enjoy viewing the listed architecture of Leadenhall Market and the nearby Lloyds building. The walkway will use timber effect paving forming a seamless transition between interior and exterior.
Façade planters are proposed to the east, west and upper south elevations providing an ambitious level of planting. We have worked closely with Woods Bagot to develop the detail for the planters to ensure the planting is viable across all elevations and heights, considering the differing micro-climates. The scheme achieves an Urban Greening Factor score of 0.92.
