We worked alongside Hawkins Brown architects, on behalf of TCHW Properties Limited, on this mixed use development of work-space, food and beverage provision and a hotel.
The site is located in Fish Island: an island inasmuch as it separated from its surroundings by the River Lea to the east, the A12 to the south and west and the Hertford Union Canal to the north (‘fish’ in reference to it’s streets, named after freshwater fish). The site was formerly the Carless Capel & Leonard Hope Chemical Works which included stables, distillery, workshops, offices and yards, all enclosed by a perimeter wall that still remains.
Our landscape and public realm proposals provide an integrated well-connected public realm in-keeping with the character of Hackney Wick. The hard palette is simple with one main material: concrete. This singular paving material, enriched by variety of textures and finishes, defines different areas and will provide continuity throughout both the external public realm and interior ground plane.
The existing trees, Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) will be retained. New tree planting will feature two distinctive species of trees enriching two key spaces: Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) will provide a distinctive accent at the corner of the site while Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) will provide an elegant and evergreen canopy over the recreation space.
